4 Ways to Improve Your Health (That Have Nothing To Do With Diet or Exercise)

The internet is clogged with diet and exercise information! Yes, these are crucial elements for overall health, but there are other things you can do to improve your every day well-being.

The months before my wedding, I took self-care to the next level. I was inspired to explore other ways to enhance my life in addition to my regular diet and exercise routine.

Below are four tips that helped me before my wedding and continue to play an active role . They may seem obvious, but I’m telling you, these small shifts truly make a difference! As a result, I’ve developed my ‘favorite body’ - one that is balanced, nourished, and strong. Check out these tips:

  1. PRIORITIZED SLEEP - it took some adjusting of my schedule (okay, simply going to bed earlier), but I tried to sleep 8.5 hours a night. Not only did I feel more refreshed in the morning, but also my appetite was under more control. I curbed my afternoon crash and made healthier food choices throughout the day.

  2. READ 'ESSENTIALISM: THE DISCIPLINED PURSUIT OF LESS' BY GREG MCKEOWN - this book helped me learn how to say ‘no.’ It’s easy to overcommit and get overwhelmed, but this book taught me the value of reduction. By taking on what’s truly valuable, I was able to stay more focused and present. The art of simplicity is truly a wise, valuable gift.

  3. REDUCED THE BOOZE - note I didn’t say ‘cut’ the booze. In an effort to save a bit of money, I reduced the frequency of social events involving alcohol. Instead of happy hour, we’d meet for coffee or take a ballet class. Or if a celebratory event was in order, it would be combined with many friends. This not only helped my wallet, but improved my skin and sleeping patterns as well.

  4. ADDRESSED MY POSTURE - as a dancer, I have pretty decent posture. BUT I realized that the muscles between my shoulder blades were quite weak. My neck had a tendency to fall forward from looking down on my phone. Addressing these issues both helped me work on my posture long term and allowed me to move more efficiently and stand confidently.
